ABOUT RUSSELL
Russell Loughlan is an interior designer and colour consultant based in Deal on the Kent coast and in Hackney in East London. With a master’s degree in Fashion & Textiles from Central Saint Martins, he brings an artist’s eye to every space. His approach — which he calls eclectic minimalism — draws on a lifelong love of period architecture, vintage furniture, antiques, and bold colour. Years of living in and renovating worn period properties have given him an instinct for honouring a building’s history while making it feel vibrant, contemporary, and liveable.
Unafraid of colour, texture, or pattern, Russell uses them to make confident, layered interiors — combining antique furniture with modern art and unexpected textiles to create spaces rich in personality and depth.
His first home on Dolphin Street in Deal, Kent — a 1768 Georgian house — became a proving ground. What began as a simple renovation uncovered deeper challenges, but his resourceful, uncompromising approach transformed it into something distinctive, earning a devoted following and reinforcing his belief that the most compelling spaces are those with history, imperfection, and soul.
I have a background in art and textiles so I'm not afraid of colour, texture or pattern. I use these to make bold statements, so spaces feel contemporary and up-to-date, but also cosy and intimate.
