Wine Bar & Shop
A sympathetic revamp and expansion of a local wine bar and bottle shop within an 18th-century property in Deal’s conservation area.
Our vision was inspired by the client’s favourite wine bars in France — creating a welcoming, bistro-style space that feels inclusive, atmospheric and comfortable enough for customers to linger over wine and small plates throughout the day.
The existing bottle shop was opened up into the neighbouring property. A rear extension was added to accommodate new WC facilities, a prep kitchen and access to the basement. As layers of the building were uncovered, a hidden rear room was revealed. Original panelling, a stained-glass window and fireplace were carefully restored to create an intimate, candlelit snug.
The main spaces were stripped back and fitted with wide Georgian-style panelling to bring warmth and depth, finished in a Farrow & Ball dusty yellow palette.
Expansive new bars were introduced, featuring Paonazzo marble to the main bar and Carrara marble to the coffee station. Bespoke banquette seating with striped upholstery, paired with an eclectic mix of tables and chairs, adds character throughout.
Floor-to-ceiling windows span the front façade, topped with stained-glass fanlights, which informed the interior palette. Soft pastel tones drawn from the glass were carried into the tiled front snug and complemented by coordinating Colours of Arley striped banquette seating.
A contemporary interpretation of classic bistro lighting was introduced through antique brass pendants and downlights, along with modern wall fixtures by Matilda Goad, paired with bespoke shades by Yateley Papers to create a warm, atmospheric glow throughout. Contemporary artworks by local studio artists bring a fresh, current edge to the classic French bistro aesthetic.
